Tuscany in April: Weather, Easter & the Real Start of Spring

    9 min read

April is the first month of the year that feels genuinely like spring in Tuscany. The transition that begins in March is properly underway by the start of April; by mid-month, the landscape is at peak floral colour and warmth has become reliable rather than occasional. Easter, in 2026 falling on 5 April, anchors the cultural calendar of the first half of the month. After Easter, April quiets noticeably and offers some of the best villa-stay value of the entire spring.

This guide covers what to expect from Tuscany weather in April, the Easter calendar, who April suits, and how the month compares to March and May either side. The numbers in this guide match our Tuscany weather pillar.

Tuscany Weather in April at a Glance

Central Tuscany averages 18°C daytime highs and 8°C overnight lows in April. Rainfall is 70mm across the month, modest. Daylight runs 13 hours, with the spring equinox having passed in late March. Sunrise around 6:45am, sunset close to 8pm by month-end.

The Tuscan Coast runs slightly warmer; the higher Val d'Orcia stays cooler in the evenings (down to 5-6°C overnight). Sea temperatures climb from 14°C at the start of the month to 18°C by month-end, swimmable for the hardy but not yet comfortable.

    Easter in Tuscany (Settimana Santa)

Easter is the year's first significant cultural event after winter. In 2026, Easter Sunday falls on 5 April, with Holy Week (Settimana Santa) running from Monday 30 March through Holy Saturday 4 April.

The most distinctive Tuscan Easter tradition is Florence's Scoppio del Carro on Easter Sunday morning. An elaborately decorated cart, drawn by white oxen, is towed through the city to Piazza del Duomo, where it is ignited by a mechanical dove (the 'colombina') flying down a wire from the high altar of the cathedral. The dove returns to the altar; the cart explodes in fireworks. The tradition dates from the First Crusade and remains a properly atmospheric event.

Siena and the smaller hilltop towns run their own Holy Week processions, typically on Good Friday evening, with hooded processions through the centro storico. These are local and uncrowded and worth attending if you happen to be near.

Easter Sunday lunch (pranzo di Pasqua) is the meal of the year for many Tuscan families. Restaurants run a single sitting, usually 1pm or 2pm, with a fixed menu typically including agnello (lamb) and torta pasqualina (Easter pie). Booking is essential weeks ahead. Villa guests can arrange a private chef for in-villa Pasqua lunch, often a better experience than the restaurant rush.

Easter Monday (Pasquetta) is the family picnic day. The countryside fills with Italian families on day trips and family lunches; the hilltop towns are full. Plan a quiet villa day rather than ambitious sightseeing.

What Else Is Happening in April

    The landscape at peak colour

Mid-April produces the most spectacular landscape window of the spring. Wisteria peaks in the first two weeks; olive trees are in fresh green leaf; the vines of Chianti and Val d'Orcia show their first proper growth; wildflower meadows across the Maremma are at peak bloom.

    Wine estate visits

Most Tuscan wine estates are fully open by April. The vines look their best (lush new growth without summer's exhaustion), the cellars are in their post-bottling phase, and the producers have more time to spend with visitors than during the autumn harvest. See our Tuscan wine guide.

    Outdoor activity restarts

Walking, cycling, horse-riding, kayaking on the rivers, are all in their best window from mid-April through May. Tour operators that closed for the winter reopen progressively through April.

    Outdoor restaurants

Most restaurants in the major destinations have moved their service outside by mid-April. The al fresco lunch tradition that defines summer Tuscany properly resumes from around the 15th.

    Crowds and Pricing in April

April divides into two distinct periods: Holy Week (around Easter) and the rest. Easter week sees the year's first significant tourist spike outside summer, with villa demand particularly high; the rest of the month is comfortably quiet, with tourist density well below May or the proper summer months.

Villa pricing for Easter week runs at peak rates (sometimes 70-80% of August prices); outside Easter, April pricing is comfortably below May, often 40-50% below August. The first two weeks (pre-Easter) and the last two weeks (post-Easter) are often the year's best pricing-to-weather windows after the early-June equivalent.

Florence and Siena outside Easter week are at their most pleasant of the entire pre-summer period, walkable, restaurants taking bookings, galleries accessible. Easter week itself sees significant demand at the major sites and restaurants; book ahead.

    Who April Suits Best

April suits a wide range of visitors: couples and groups on cultural breaks; walkers and cyclists in the best weather window of the year for outdoor activity; first-time Tuscany visitors wanting the landscape at its most spectacular; families with school-age children whose Easter holidays fall in April; wine-focused trips when estate visits are at their most personal.

April is less suited to: pool-centric holidays (still too cool for unheated pool use); visitors with absolute schedule flexibility who can choose May instead (May is marginally better across most dimensions); and travellers wanting sustained summer heat (April is reliably warm but rarely properly hot).

What to Pack for Tuscany in April

Layered clothing leaning warm. Daytime: t-shirts, a long-sleeved top, jeans or chinos; by the last week, summer kit becomes plausible on warm afternoons.

Evenings: a proper jumper or light jacket through the month. A waterproof for occasional showers; a light scarf for cool restaurant terraces.

Footwear: comfortable walking shoes for hilltop towns; trainers for any walking or cycling; pool sandals only if you're staying at a heated-pool property.

Other: SPF 30+ sunblock (the April sun is stronger than visitors expect), sunglasses, a sun hat for outdoor activity. For Florence visits, a shoulder cover-up for entering churches, particularly important during Easter when church visiting is at its peak.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Scoppio del Carro worth seeing?

Yes, for visitors in Florence on Easter Sunday morning. The event runs roughly 11am to noon outside the Duomo, and it is a uniquely Tuscan piece of theatre.

Can you visit Florence in April?

Excellent month for Florence. Outside Easter week, the city is at its most pleasant, walkable, restaurants accessible, galleries with manageable queues. Easter week itself is busier.

Are villa rentals available for Easter in Tuscany?

Yes, but Easter week books 6-9 months ahead for the most popular properties. For Easter 2027 plan now; for Easter 2026 (5 April), the available inventory is largely set.

    Plan an April Villa Stay

April divides into two markets, Easter week (premium, books 9+ months ahead) and the rest of April (one of the year's better pricing-to-weather windows). For Easter, we can arrange private chef service for Easter Sunday lunch and brief you on the local Holy Week processions worth attending. For non-Easter April dates, we can match you to a villa in the right region for what you want from the trip, walking, wine, or simply the quieter pre-summer version of Tuscany.
